Alien Arena

Alien Arena is rather unique in the world of first person shooter games, first because of its 1950's science fiction-type atmosphere. Secondly, the AI (artificial intelligence) in single player mode is definitely superior to most.

You can play solo against the game's AI or go online for multiplayer action. The game has an internal server browser that allows players to chat and looks for other players online. There are maps like Space Station and Ghost Town. There is an interesting variety of weapons in Alien Arena, some of which have some nasty surprises. There are the usual things like flame throwers, grenade launchers, rocket launchers and chain guns. Then there is the Vaporizer, hard to come by but it's a guaranteed one shot kill. The Violator is even harder to find and is also guaranteed kill but can harm the player, too, if it isn't used at pointblank range. There is a beam gun, the Disruptor, which is hard to aim accurately. The default weapon is an energy ball gun that is rather weak.

Alien Arena has smooth, fast game play. It has over 60 levels and comes with 9 weapons, six player characters and 6 game play modes like Cattle Prod, Deathball and All Out Assault. Death match is where you kill everyone possible while trying to survive, All Out Assault has vehicles you can travel in and in Capture the Flag you have to steal the enemy's flag and take it to your base. Arenas range from very small to massive. Dozens of maps and models and various accessories have been created by players in the AA community.

The AI in most games becomes predictable after a few matches but Alien Arena's AI seems able to adapt and really challenge you in single player mode. The game is very stable and easy to work with. Should you encounter any problems there is an online game forum where you can get help from friendly community members.

Glest

Glest is a real time strategy computer game set in a medieval world. The two factions battling for control are Tech and Magic, with each having its own types of buildings, combat units and upgrades.

Tech consists of humans with both medieval mechanical weapons. This team can build large robotic devices with which to engage and hopefully defeat the enemy. Beginners with no or little experience should start with Tech as it doesn't require learning advanced options.

Magic is geared toward advanced players. This team cannot do hand to hand combat but are more versatile than Tech. A Magic player has the ability to cast spells, conjure zombie warriors and the use of dragons and golems.

When starting the game you can choose Forest, Winter or Dark Forest as your tileset. Players construct buildings, collect resources, create workers and produce military units to destroy enemy bases. You can play in Scenario mode with preset maps and have your enemies and difficulty levels chosen for you. Or you can start in the Custom mode that lets you choose options, like selecting your faction and map and how many enemies you'll face.

Glest has a multiplayer option if you have a LAN connection. It is not as technologically deep as most commercial games but its 3D textures are beautifully rendered. It is rich in detail and each character is distinguishable from others. There is a night/day cycle which makes night skirmishes challenging. As of now there is no story mode and only seven maps to choose from.

A popular fork of Glest, MegaGlest, has all the features of Glest as well as many new ones. The main focus for the MegaGlest project has been improving the network play experience.

VDrift

VDrift is a cross-platform, open source driving simulation made with drift racing in mind. The driving physics engine was recently re-written from scratch but was inspired and owes much to the Vamos physics engine. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) v2. It is currently available for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Windows.

This game is in the early stages of development but is already very playable. Currently the game features:

FFSJ consists of two main programs: File Splitter and File Joiner. File Splitter enables you to split a large file into small chunks which are easy to be sent and stored, while File Joiner allows you to join these split parts together so that the original file is restored.
